I can’t believe the Island Getaway Boho Bag was the second pattern I released, time sure flies! When I released this pattern, I didn’t have a lot of followers on Instagram, and I didn’t have this amazing blog that allows me to bring you guys free patterns, so I decided that it was time to bring this design over to the blog!
If you are familiar with my Boho Mug Rug, I think you will find the stitch work very similar and that its because I used my first pattern to create this bag! So if you already made The Boho Mug Rug, I think this bag will be fairly easy for you to make.
I love the boho vibes this crochet bag has, and I think its perfect for the summertime!

Here are the materials you will need for this pattern!
- Worsted weight yarn (size 4) I used lily’s sugar n cream cotton yarn
- You will need about 300 yards of cotton yarn for this bag
- You will need more yarn if you decide to make your bag bigger.
- 4mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Button to close your bag
- Yarn needle
Abbreviations:
CH- chain
SC- single crochet
HDC- half double crochet
DC- double crochet
ST- stitch
STS- stitches
Notes
- You can make this bag bigger or smaller if you want.
- Make sure that your starting chain is an even number.
- Make sure that the first panel is longer than the second panel because that will form the flap of your bag.
I suggest making the second panel first if you decide to make the bag bigger or smaller. That way you can see how big or small your bag is going to look like.
Finished Bag Size
Finished bag 8” wide, 8” high
Flap about 3” high
Braided strap about 20” long
Pattern
First panel (back panel)
CH 34
Row 1: HDC in second chain from hook, HDC across. (33 STS total)
Row 2: CH 4 turn, DC on the third stitch (CH 4 counts as your first
double crochet and chain 1 space) CH 1, skip one ST, DC in next ST, *CH 1, skip one ST, DC in next ST*, Repeat from * to * until you reach the end of row (33 STS total)
Row 3: CH 1 turn, HDC across including the chain 1 space, Make your last
HDC is on top of the CH 3 of previous round. (33 STS total)
Row 4: CH 1 turn. HDC across (33 STS total)
Row 5 to 25: repeat rows 2, 3, and 4 in that order
Row 26: repeat row 2
Row 27: repeat row 3 the tie off
Note: If you made the bag smaller or bigger repeat row 2 to 3 for the last two rows of your panels. (example my bag’s last two rows were row 26, and row 27)
Second Panel ( front panel)
Rows 1-4: same as back panel
Row 5 to 16: repeat rows 2, 3, and 4 in that order
Row 17: repeat row 2
Row 18: repeat row 3 then tie off
When you finish with both panels, place the second panel on top of the first one. Make sure the first panel is facing you with the wrong side, and the second panel is facing you with the right side. This picture is just an example of a smaller bag that I made, but no matter what size you make, this step will be the same!
Now you are going to single crochet along the sides of the bag. This is going to close your bag. Start to SC where the arrow is pointing and finish on the other side and tie off.
Button:
Close the flap of your bag and see where you want to sew your button. I placed mine in the center of the bag around the 13th row.
Strap:
Make three long chains the same size. Mine measured 60 inches long, but you can make them as long or short as you want to. Once you finish the three long chains, you are going to braid them. This is going to make the strap of your bag stronger.
To start you are going to insert the end of your 3 strands on the side of the bag. I inserted mine in 3 different places than tied them
After that you are going to braid the strands until you reach the end. Leave some of the three strands unbraided so that you can pull them through the opposite side of the bag.
Insert the strands on the opposite side of the bag and tie them together.
Fringe:
Cut strands that are about 15 inches long. You will use 4 strands for each set of fringe. Put fringe along the bottom of the purse and on the bottom of the purse’s flap.
My bag had 10 sets on the bottom of the flap and 10 sets on the bottom of the bag. If you want your bag to look a bit fuller just add more fringe to the bottom of the bag, it is up to you!!
Now you are finished!! I hope you loved working on this pattern as much as I did! Don’t forget to tag me on Instagram @tenderwarmcreations I would love to see all your finished bags!!
